In 2020, the United States Supreme Court case McGirt v. Oklahoma marked a historic win for treaty rights. This landmark decision confirmed that our reservation was never disestablished, affirming that our land is still ours to govern.
Since that ruling, there has been a concentrated effort to undermine our rights in the courts — how do we move forward? During this month’s virtual “ᏣᎳᎩ: Wherever We Are, Aftermath of McGirt Edition” event, we’ll bring together a panel of experts to discuss the impact of McGirt, state vs. Tribal rights, and the future of Tribal sovereignty.
McGirt v. Oklahoma — and more recently, the United States Supreme Court’s opinion in Oklahoma v. Castro-Huerta — raises questions regarding who has jurisdiction on reservation land. We invite you to join us as we delve into the complexities of these landmark decisions.
Our conversation will be hosted by OsiyoTV Host and Executive Producer Jennifer Loren and will feature insights from Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr., Deputy Chief Bryan Warner, Attorney General for the Cherokee Nation Sara Hill, Marshal Shannon Buhl, former U.S. Attorney Trent Shores, and Marshal’s investigator Shawnna Roach.
Look out for an email with more information from Attorney General Hill soon. We look forward to seeing you on the 30th!
